I guess it's that time again... [07 Dec 2006|07:03pm]
...to post another homework assignment. This is for my digital illustration class. As you can see, I took the guy from the previous entry and put him in this one, so maybe that other piece wasn't such a waste of time afterall.

...and again with the copyright. For the assignment we had to illustrate the Spyhouse espresso bar, a local and well known coffee house in Minneapolis. Our teacher, the awesome awesome James O'Brien (this is a link), took us there during a class day and bought everyone a drink. That's like 20 or so kids and he bought us all coffees and teas. He's so cool.

Anyway, so in the illustration I'm sitting there drinking a Tokyo Rose (some espresso drink), and reading a pretentious book even though in real life I hardly ever read. Some flowers and fun shapes are floating around, and there's some photos I took of spyhouse collaged in, and in the far background there are a few Minneapolis downtown buildings I drew. Overall, I kind of like it. I'm really starting to like doing my illustrations digitally, I might start using photoshop a lot more.

P.S.- I'm be December 18th, and... maybe I'll see some of you friends around town because I really want to know how everyone is doing. I'll be in Wyandotte until the 4th then I'm down to Iowa to visit with Ben for a while.

I have so much homework, and yet I work on stuff like this instead. It's for the art sale! I think this is turning into a series, "words of advice" maybe?

Did I mention that this is probably my favorite piece of art I've ever made? Well it is. I want everything that I make in the future to have a resemblance to this illustration. I don't exactly know what I put that copyright symbol at the bottom. Possibly because I don't trust livejournal. Also maybe because I'm SO CORPORATE... OH MY GOD!

Well, apparently I can't design t-shirts. As you can see from the score a few posts down. =(

I think I quit threadless, it just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

My version of one of those READ posters? A sheriff (sherrif?) with a tiny hat. I don't know. I like drawing fatty cats and making them say "moo moo moo". I talked to Ben about starting a card company named Fatty Bo Batty cards. I would use those fat cats for my logo if I ever made the company.

I really don't have any idea what's going on here. There's a weird rollerskating horse/pony thing up at the top, a guy with three eyes, some random faces... I must have been bored. I like the three business men at the bottom. You can't see the light blue marker that well though, I should have scanned it in little better. =\

Sketchbook. [19 Jul 2006|11:10pm]
I've decided to start posting again. And the only thing I can think of is sketchbook pages. So here is the cover of my book. I'll try to post a new page everyday.

Tomorrow I will post page 001.

I know I never update or post anything, but this...

this is worth it:

I'm really curious as to what they were thinking when they made this bag. I mean, they somehow managed to recreate the whole shebang with one go. Props to Planters.

Ben and I were shopping and we saw this, so of course we bought it. They turned out to be a really good snack though.

Oookaayyyyyyy.

Quick update, I suppose.

We got a DUPLEX (PS: this text is a link)

Ben found it on Craig's list, and Joel and Lindsey checked it out, and it is GOOD! So they put a down payment on it and we have it for the summer and into next year. I'm excited and nervous, because we have to pay rent and that is a scary thing.

By the way Lindsey is Joel's girlfriend! They have been together for a while now, just thought I'd let you know...

...anyway...

I started my Visual Journal class, here is my first assignment. A collage!

The class is turning about to be really cool. It's kind of like, make and write about stuff, and put it in a sketchbook. Then you get a grade! I wish I had more time to work on my entries though, because this semester is so busy.

I went with Ben to Omaha last weekend to shoot his documentary on Capoeira retreat. Our good from Tim from Iowa is taking classes and their class went to Omaha to meet up with other groups to practice and stuff. In case you don't know (because I had no idea), Capoeira is a Brazilian martial arts-esque artform. To use a well known but not specifically correct example, think Eddie Gordo from the Tekken games. It was a fun trip, but very tiring. We drove a lot over the weekend, but I think Ben got some good footage. Everyone was really friendly there too.

One last thing!

My final animation assignment from my class last semester got into the Made @ MCAD show! Apparently, it's kind of hard to get in the show, for fine arts and design anyway. I don't think many animations were submitted, so I kind of got in by luck. The opening reception is this Friday and my brother is going to be here too and that is so cool because he'll get to see and I'm excited!

I can't wait to see my brother, it'll be so fun!

YAAY!

School school. School school schooooool.

That is pretty much my life right now. SO MANY PROJECTS. I guess none of them are that big, but still, I hate being busy.

I have a screenprinting assignment due this Friday that I haven't started. Even though we had all day last Friday to work on it. One of my screens RIPPED, the other had a whole I had to repair, and the last one (borrowed from Sarah) I had to scrub the crap out of with Dehazer and it's still not all clean. So the only thing I got done on Friday was getting my screens ready. So somehow this week I have to get it together and print 10 prints, SIX LAYERS EACH. That's six different stencils I have to make, and also make them look good. I'm a bit frightened.

I talked to Caitlin the other day while I was down in the dumps and it made me feel better. It made me feel a little more like being at home, which was nice. I actually haven't talked to anyone from Michigan in a long time come to think of it. I should get on that. I talked to my parents a few times over the weekend and it made me miss them. They're at Michigan Tech visiting my brother so they called a few times to chat. I haven't really heard from or talked to Ben's parents or friends in a while and I miss them too, I must be having Iowa withdrawal or something. Kitty and Husky withdrawal too, I miss Ben's animals.

I beat Silent Hill like three times in the past month. The first time I got the Bad+ ending and was super pissed. The second time I got the Good+ ending (which unlocked the Katana and the channeling stone). The last time I got the mysterious UFO ENDING! Which was really really lame. That unlocked the hyperblaster gun, which, surprise, is also really lame. A bit of an upset, but since it's Silent Hill I am apologetic.

I love that game.

BY THE WAY! Do you know what comes out this Friday? NIGHT WATCH. That Russian movie that I thought was coming out back in October that I'm rather excited for. Also, EIGHT BELOW comes out this Friday, which is basically Homeward Bound...
in Antarctica...
with Huskies...
YES!

Oh yeah, I guess I'm going to Omaha at the end of February? Ben's being ambitious and doing a documentary there. I'm nervous! and excited though! I hope it's a blast!

Another quick update. I'm not sure if anyone out there has played/heard of the game Silent Hill for the original Playstation console, but it was a great game. One of my favorites if not my favorite game ever.

Now, there is this to look forward to:
The movie version.

I'm really nervous about it though. Video game movies are awful. They just are, and not one movie has broken that fact yet. I'm am hoping, oh my Lord am I hoping, that this movie is good. If it's an okay movie, that's fine too. As long as it's scary and has a good story, then I'm in. If the acting sucks, I could care less, I just want it to have a good story.

Watching the preview, the movie looks pretty freakin' awesome. Very close to the original game, with a few adjustments. The preview gave me the chills. I really don't want this to turn into a Resident Evil, because those movies sucked SO BAD.

Some things from the preview gave me hope:
1.) No ridiculous techno or hardcore music in the background.
2.) No explosions.
3.) No horrible actors trying to be all bad-ass-like.
4.) Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez aren't in it.
5.) The "dark world" looks really scary.
6.) Cheryl (Shannon in the movie) isn't played by Dakota Fanning.
7.) The movie actually takes place in Silent Hill, unlike stupid Resident Evil which took place in some lame place called "the hive" or whatever.

other things that make me hopeful:

-not directed by Uwe Boll (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne)
-Konami and the people that created the game played a key role in making the movie
-the characters are played by actors/actresses I've heard of
-rumors of Pyramid Head being in the movie!

I guess we'll see how this goes on April 21st. Until then, all I can do is wait and hope.

[30 Jan 2006|02:48am]
I figured I'd just do a super quick update, since I haven't posted in a while. Later I'll go into more detail or something...

Classes are going okay. This semester I have:

Illustration Two- It feels like it's going to be more difficult than the first one, which makes sense. The teacher seems pretty nice, but she's not as cool as Tom Garrett (Ill. One teacher).

Significant Directors: Alfred Hitchcock- A course about the history of Hitchcock and his movies. We watch his more famous films and discuss them in class. Movies are good, lectures are boring.

Drawing One- The next level of drawing beyond foundation courses. From the first two classes, it actually seems pretty fun and not as tedious as the foundation drawings. The teacher is kind of strange, but to be honest, most drawing teachers are like that. This class seems more open ended than past classes as well.

Art in the Cities- A liberal arts class about the history of art museums/galleries and art reviews. This class we talk about art in Minneapolis and St. Paul and discuss art reviews and write our own. It seems like it's going to be pretty awful. But from that last class it didn't seem that bad. It may change in the next few weeks.

Screenprinting- I have wanted to take this class SO bad, but now I feel like it may have been a bad idea. It's a really technical class and everything has to be done correctly for prints to turn out nice. I'm worried for this class. Really.

Later on two online classes will be added to the mix, Visual Journals, and the Illustrated Portrait. I'm excited for both.

Class tomorrow! Sleep time!
3 Thoughts [x] What Do YOU Think?

[01 Jan 2006|05:04am]
Happy New Year! 2006. That's pretty cool. I'll be twenty years old this May, two decades. Two decades of growing up, that's a long time. If I was a dog, I'd be 140 (right?). No creaky bones or joints yet, hopefully all the painting, typing, and guitar playing I've been doing will give me a few extra years. I should probably wait until I'm actually twenty to talk about how it makes me feel. I'll try to summarize it in one sentence right now, then when I turn twenty, I'll summarize it again. So here's my sentence:

I still feel like I'm twelve, and as long as I can keep that feeling and remember it, hopefully I can feel like that later on in life.

That's the best I could come up with. Maybe in the next few months I'll become more wise and that one word I can't think of right now. So change 'maybe' to 'hopefully' in the previous sentence there.

The new year celebration was fun. Almost my whole family (aunts, uncles included) was here. It was nice to see everyone, and we played board games which was cool. My cousin and I won a round of the game called 'Scene it', which I've never played before but we totally owned.

After 12:00 rolled over I started taking pictures. My cousin rounded up my mom and dad and his side of the family for a picture. I took this one, and for some reason it stood out as a really great picture.

In my intro to photo class my teacher showed us a famous photo of a group of women that were getting ready for a large group photo, but the photographer took a picture just before everyone was ready and only one woman was actually looking into the camera. Not that this picture is similar to that particular photo, but since no one is really looking at the camera it makes it so interesting. I really think it's one of the best pictures I've taken.

Well, it's late. I've got some Castlevania to play before to going to bed.

Goooooooooooooooo-night!

(PS- I think 'academic' was the word I was looking for earlier.)
2 Thoughts [x] What Do YOU Think?

[28 Dec 2005|04:10am]
A drawing from the train to Chicago:

It's a band of some sort. I didn't like the guy on the left, so I decided not to color him.

I can't seem to get to bed before 5 am, and I can't ever sleep past 1 pm, so basically I've gotten about 7 hours a sleep per night on average. I am on BREAK, so I declare this not enough sleep.

Christmas was fun. It's nice to see family for a change, but something gets on my nerves everytime I see an aunt or uncle. I'm going to take a risk here and assume that no one from my family reads my blog or journal, and I'm going to talk about something that really bothers me.

So we'll start off with this: I am gay. BAM, surprised? I hope not. You should know by now. Moving on...

I told my parents back in October of 2004, to which I didn't get a very good response. In fact, I would call it a very non-good response. There was some crying, mostly on their end, while I tried to rationalize it a little bit with them. My dad, really not okay with it (I believe the word devastated was used). My mom, about half-okay. Being a mom that she is, she just wants me to be happy, that's good. She also said that she doesn't feel it in her heart that I'm gay, that... not so good since I'm not switching teams anytime soon.

So my parents know, however, they forbid me to tell anyone in my family. I'm sure they're both super embarassed, and that I totally let them down and I suck. That's not really a surprise given we're a Catholic family in the suburbs and they haven't had any involvment with gay and lesbian people. My parents aren't bad people at all, they just don't understand the lifestyle, so I can understand why they are acting this way. Is it fair for me? Not really, but whatever.

So my parents know, I'm relieved I told them. PHEW. However, this is where things get annoying. Whenever I come home for break, relatives are on my case:
"Do you have a girlfriend? Why not? You're young and good looking I'm very surprised that the girls aren't all over you. Aren't there any good looking girls at your school? What's the deal?"

It drives me crazy. I know there are plenty of guys that don't have girlfriends who are going to school who get the same crap from their relatives, but when you've got your uncles asking if there are any "hot chicks" at your school and you have to pretend that you are interested in girls, it gets annoying.

Another thing. I HAVE NO IDEA IF MY BROTHER KNOWS OR NOT. Oh my God, it drives me nuts. I'm really scared, above any person in the entire world, to tell him. I'm really close with my brother and one might think he would be the easiest person to tell, but I'm scared that I would let him down. I'm also scared that he would just hate me or something. However, he may know already, and he might be mad that I haven't actually told him the truth. Predicament.

My mom knows that I am with Ben. She's okay with it. That is also a relief. My dad told me that he would never let another man (meaning a boyfriend) into his house. Since Ben has visited a two times, you can probably guess who doesn't know. I guess my mom is the only person, that I know of, who knows I'm with Ben. However, I'm sure kids at RHS have found out that I'm gay, and have passed it around. Since I have three cousins that go there now, and an aunt that teaches there, I'm sure they found out too. So there is the possibility that some of my family members are aware, and if they are, they seem to be okay with it (since all my cousins talked to me at my Grandma's house for Christmas and didn't seem to be bothered at all). My aunt did seem to be acting kind of strange though, she didn't really say 'hi' or 'merry christmas' to me and kind of avoided eye contact. That's a bit frightening.

Lastly, some great things have come out of this.

Above all things, I'm incredibly happy. Ben is the greatest person ever and I love him. He's just great. Hands down the perfect guy and it feels awesome being with him. He's my best friend too so I can just talk to him about anything and it's always fun to be around him. Also, all my friends both in Wyandotte and at MCAD are 100% fine with it. I'm pretty sure everyone at MCAD knows Ben and I too because we're like, "the gay couple" there. At least that's how I think of it, I'm not sure how Ben feels about that though. Lastly, Ben's family is okay with it too. And it feels great knowing that I'm excepted and don't have to hide anything. Ben and his family is fucking awesome.

So it's been about a year and three months since I decided to "come out", and nothing has gotten worse, only better. Sorry if I bored anyone (if anyone read this) with my complaints and opinions. However, you'll know much more about my story. =D yay!

Good night!

PS- I feel conceited now.
3 Thoughts [x] What Do YOU Think?

Charlie was Emo [24 Dec 2005|06:05pm]
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was on today, and I realized something...

Charlie Bucket was emo.

Just look at this face. Plus, his hair must have been reference material for the latest styles. However, his hair is blonde. Emo kids have black hair, or dye it black.

"I'm crying on the inside."

After watching more of the movie. The foundation of the emo lifestyle becomes more clear.
Messenger bag- check
Pants that are too short- check
Chuck Taylor-esque shoes- check
Clothes that are too tight (they aren't that bad in the movie)- check
Shop at salvation army stores- check
People sing to them- check
Chasing impossible dreams- check
And finally, trying to find the golden ticket- check?

Where am I going with this? I don't know. Just another point that emo kids aren't original no matter how stupid they look. Am I right about this? Is all my information correct? Probably not. I don't even know what emo means.

I drew this on the train. As soon as the mustache happened, it was apparent where this drawing was going. I sloppily colored it in photoshop.

More drawings later.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
2 Thoughts [x] What Do YOU Think?

two entries, quick! part TWO! [15 Dec 2005|03:34am]
My illustration critique was... kind of confusing. I have absolutely no idea if my teacher liked it or not. He seemed impressed by the scale, but I think the overall illustrations were... not that great. I still like them a LOT though. It's meant to be kind of like an alphabet block, but only A,B,C,D. Here they are in all their cardboard glory.

A-Side: An acrobat, astronaut, and architect, "airdiving" (my version of skydiving), out of an airplane over the Alps, while forming an acute triangle (sort of). In the background are altocirrus clouds. The painting is done in Acrylic (also an A), but each side is done in acrylic anyway.
-Probably my least favorite of all four. I just don't like the way I tried to render the figures. I guess I'm just not too good at that. Plus, I did the airplane at 5:30 AM before class and was really non-caring about the final result.

B-Side: Ben blowing blue bubbles, while wearing a brown beanie and a burgundy blazer, while standing in front of bars (the green lines). This painting is done using the Ben-day dot technique (which Lichtenstein used in his art).
-This one is above all, my favorite of all four, and possibly any illustration I did this semester. It's really sparing in detail and environment, but I still like it a lot.

C-Side: Criminal crows stealing cash while near a cherry tree. This one is done in Collage. Neato!
-This is my second favorite. The crows were made using a single image of a feather which I printed out 60 times and cut and pasted to form the birds. The Tree is made out of different types of paper, and the flower are acrylic on plastic bag. The money bag is made of an old pillow case! I drew some black lines on the tree trying to create a stylistic tree bark which failed miserably. I might go back and recut the paper to fix it.

D-side: A portrait of me dancing with drips dripping down speaking a dialogue bubble. This one was done in Drybrush.
-I like this one better than the A-side, mainly because it was 6 in the morning and I wanted to get done, and this is what came out. I just like painting all crazy like when I know it's not really going to matter too much.

OVERALL SIZE:

This is what I did my final on. A 3x3x3 foot box. That's 36 square feet! It took me a while to finish it, and I did the majority the day before it was due (bad idea). My parents are picking me up at the end of the year so I'll get to bring it home! Awesome!

Okay, bed time, work tomorrow!
